RAINY DAY TRAIL FOR HORSE RIDERS

LRRETA knows how much local horse owners enjoy using the Ray Roberts trails to train and exercise their horses. Our multi-use trails are carefully managed and maintained to minimize erosion and damage. Because of this, they are closed to bikes and horses when the park receives more than half an inch of rain.
Spring 2025 brought nearly 20 inches of rain, which unfortunately led to several days of trail closures. In response, LRRETA worked closely with State Park management to create a trail that will always be open to horses: rain or shine!
The new Greenbelt Rainy Day Trail is located below the dam along the tree line in the large hayfield. You can park at the Ray Roberts Greenbelt Trailhead and follow the sidewalk toward the hayfield—you’ll see a mowed path leading to the tree line.
While the Greenbelt Rainy Day Trail will be mowed periodically, it is considered an unmaintained trail, meaning it is not suitable for bikes or hikers. Because there may be an occasional hole or uneven patch, we recommend walking or a slow jog along the tree line. If you and your horse are ready to pick up the pace, the straight roadsides are great for a lope or canter.
One loop around the field (as shown in the photo) is about 1.75 miles. Two loops should provide a solid workout for both horse and rider!
